Bjarne Steffen is an Assistant Professor at ETH Zürich, and heads the Climate Finance and Policy Group at ETH Zürich’s Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences. In his research, he analyzes policies related to the low- carbon transition in the energy and financial sectors. To this end, he works at the intersection of environmental/energy economics, financial economics, and innovation studies. He won a prestigious ERC Starting Grant in 2020, to execute a research agenda on how public policy can facilitate investments in new low-carbon technologies.
At ETH Zürich, Dr. Steffen leads an interdisciplinary team of researchers with backgrounds in economics, business, and engineering. He is affiliated with ETH’s Institute of Science, Technology and Policy, the ETH Energy Science Center, ETH Center for Sustainable Future Mobility, and ETH Centre for Energy Policy and Economics. He a member of international advisory bodies, such as the World Economic Forum’s Taskforce on Mobilizing Investment for Clean Energy in Emerging Economies, and the OECD/UNEP Green Finance Platform’s Sustainable Finance Effectiveness Working Group.
During 2019, Dr. Steffen he was a visiting scholar both at MIT CEEPR and the MIT Joint Program. Before, Bjarne worked as Principal in the Boston Consulting Group’s energy and infrastructure practices and was project manager for the Strategic Infrastructure Initiative at the World Economic Forum. He studied economics at University of Mannheim and UC Berkeley, and holds a PhD in energy economics from University of Duisburg- Essen.
